SWIMMING.

T.R.O, CLUB'S 'CARNIVAL

Visitors to the Century Commemoration Batli,s yesterday liacl the pleasure of witnessing a series of very good races. which were promoted by L lie swimming club connected with the. Timaru Rowing Club, '['lie attendance was large, the weather all that could be desired, and tlu; sport of a decidedly high class. The races wece nil keenly competed for, and in most casts the finishes were so close as to show that the handicapping was beyond reproach. Probably the most- interesting event of the" day was the 50 yards championship of £outh Canterbury, the two placed men in which both hailed from Christchurcli. It was unfortunate that O'Donoghue, one of the Timaru cracks, made a bad start, for lie had an excellent chance of securing the coveted honour. Another exciting race was the 200 yards relay. Ten teams started, one each from lUchniond, East Christchurch, »Star Club, and Geraldine, and three Ironi the 'timaru Rowing Club, and the Timaru Amateur Club. The event was won by East Christchurch. The two b;st swimmers competing were undoubtedly Dodge and Bull, of Christchurch, both of whom are line swimmers. Tin- diving w;;s exceptionally good, especially the spring-board diving, ill which there were eleven entrants. This event and the high dive, in which there were live competitors, were both won by iSherwood. A humorous turn was given to the proceedings by the antics of two or three fancy-dressed men, who created much merriment by their eemingly accidental falls into the water; while the egg and spoon race lik-ewi.se added to the enjoyment of those present. The Marine Band were in attendance, and rendered several selections in satisfactory ~iyle. The following are the results, the times given being the actual times of winners-:
