TEMUKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the, Temuka Borough Council was held in the Coun< ll Chambers on Wednesday -evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Buxton, McLean, Barr, Judson, J. Brown, Holwell, W. F. Evans and A. Frew.

The results of the. poll on the prorjeeal to raise a special loan for the extension of th 3 drainage area, were received from the returning office and were, as follows: —For 24, against 24, informal'2. Mr William Jeffries applied for a refund of £4 5s 4d,"amount of urates ovei charged him by the Council, owing to the Valuation Department having raised the applicant's total valuation and having omitted to reduce portions disposed of by him.—The application was granted. The remainder of the correspondence dealt with was of a routine character;

- A letter signed by the representatives of the Anglican, Wesleyan, Presbyterian and Primitive Methodist : Churches was brought before the Council protesting against the introduction of Sunday concerts and asking that .the Council grant no more permits for concerts on, a Sunday. The by-laws showed that the Council had'power to issue special: permits for.Sunday concerts. After considerable discussion the matter was allowed ,to stand oyer, : the-; Mayor in the meantime to use his .discretion when granting permits. A letter was read from Mr Flatman enclosing a letter from the Railway: Department re the proposal to provide acceirs to the railway station from' Alexandra street, and pointing out that the railway would grant an acqess to the beween: Alexandra and Denmark litreets if the Council were agreeable to .'the closing of the present accecs at Denmark street The majority of the councillors were of opinion that the Department's proposal would noti be entertained, the matter in the meantime to be left in the hands of the Mayor and the clerk. Accounts, amounting to £164 14 8 Hd. were, passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
