Hie genf-r.il <ipinion was that the South ( antcrburv Club would repeat tln-ir win of last rear, but the Trinity boys wore confidently expected by tht-ir supporters to "shake things up." while many anticipated that the team entered by the new Waimate Club would pro v.- a dark liois.-. The course was i!|at over which the cor : responding race was decided last year, the si.-.i. :it, poini- .• biiug tl"< south end of Caroline I'.ay. whence the trail led alun-j tie elill's. encircled I lie abattoir, and sub.-iequentlv led homeward over the original ground traversed. Punctually at 2.30 the teams were sta:ted before a large minibei- of spectators. and thi pace "was made very hot from tli-:; start. The field tailed off, and at the half-way mark Ckuighton and Sinclair were in tlie lead, with four Trinity men in attendance. The Wainiale team was by this time seen to be hopelessly out of it, and the leading Trinity runners, evidently finding the pace too strong, r.oon fell back, leaving iive members of the 5.C.11. in the lead, this order being maintained to the finish. The first man to reach the winning postwas Claughton, who finished very fresh in the excellent time of 19min 41 l-s&ec, with Sinclair a few yards away. The following is the order in which the firsttwelve competitors finished : —Claughton (5.C.11.),' Sinclair (S.C.H.), C. Ma It bus (S.C.H.), Walsh (S.C.H.), Cokor (S.C.H.), Jlntke (Trinity), Norrie (Trinity), D. filanville (Trinity), Mansford (S.C.H.), Mver.s (S.C.H.), Mclvenzie (Waimate), Panton (5.C.H.).; Tlis. .South Canterbury men were thus easily successful in winning. The Waimate. team was materially weakened by the. defection of three of its best runners, who were, unable to mak-o the journey, while. Trinity, to a leaser extent, suffered in tlie- same way. Mr F. J. Dunn acted as starter and timekeeper, Messrs Eraser, Culverliottse, and Aylen as judges, and Messrs Novris and Golds-man as marksmen. Prior to the departure of their train, the Waimate visitors were entertained in Hilton's tea rooms by the Timaru Clubs, and here a mutual interchange of compliments took place. The committee of the S.C.H. desire to thank the Timaru Rowing Club for the use of their dressing shed.
