In the Assembly Mr Bent, in submitting hie proposal for the reduction of the income tax, eaid lie would not be orry if it was not carried. He could not afford the reduction, and if ad'opted it would mean cutting- down other votes. ->ln committee tlia reduction of the tax was altered from 20 per cent, to 15 per cent., and the 'exemption of incomes was raised to £l5O.

The -Assembly by 27 votes to 12 votes) rejected the Council's amendments to the Franchise Bill. GOLD-BUYING REVELATIONS. MELBOURNE, September 19. A deputation asked the Minister of Mines to amend the law in regard to gold buying. He made a 1 startling statement with reference to the large quantities of gold which reached the 'hands of illegitimate buyers. He alleged that some of the latter kept silent crushers on their premises, which' were most elaborately guarded.
