SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE FORMED. A meeting of representatives of the Ti-° maru Rowing Club, Timaru Swimming Club and Geraldine Swimming Club was held in Hutcheson's Rooms last evening with the object of forming a South Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association. Mr F. J. Dunn, who was voted to the chair, explained the advantages to swimmers of having a centre for this district. Mr G. Sanderson was appointed secretary pro tern. Mr W. Johnson, secretary of the Canterbury Centre, forwarded some, information necessary for the guidance of the meeting. In his opinion the formation of a centre would boom swimming here. It would be necessary to draw up a set of rules which would then be forwarded to the N.Z. Amateur Swimming Association. The centre would have 'a share of- the government grant of £IOO per year made to the Council, and this money could be used for prizes. Mr J. W. Butler wrote to say that he would be pleased to act as the centre's dele-gate on the Association. The Temuka Club wrote declining to join the centre at present, owing to the fact that they had no baths and were obliged to use the ' river; but they approved of the formation of a centre. ;Mr Dunn said he had written to the Temuka and Afhbnrton Clubs. The latter replied that-they were more in touch with Christ church, but would decide the matter at their annual meeting. , The Speaker went on to. say that each club would pay £1 Is fee to the Association and the fee payable to tha centre could be fixed later. Mr G. • Priest formally moved and Mr Broadhead seconded. ' that a centre be formed for the South Canterbury district, and the motion w r as carried unanimously. It was also decided that the centre be ,->f filiated to the New Zealand Association ; tha.t Mr Butler be appointed the centre's delegate on the Council: and that a subcommittee .consisting of Messrs Dunn, Priest and Sanderson be appointed to draw up a set of rules. This being all the business that could- be taken, art iiifonnal discussion took place on of forming- new clubs; the allotment of dates to clubs for sports: and the;oi'estinn of obtajninar one of the ch"-mpionshin meetings for this district.
