BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A SECTARIAN QUESTION.

To tho Editor of the " Timaru Herald." kir, I £Se that ill- T. I-lawksy has been nominated for a seat on the Education Board. Some years ago the headmastership of a certain school was vacant. Applications were called and one of the- applicants interviewed: a certain member of the Committee. He was informed by this committeeman that one thing was certain, namely, that no Catholic would be appointed. I would like to hear Mr Hawkey's views- as to whether he considers a Committeeman who expressed himself as above should ever aspire to a seat on an Education Board. ' I am, etc., IN QUISITTIVE. MR. HAWKEY'S REPLY. A copy of the above letter being submitted to Mr Hawkey, the latter said that personally he had never made such a statement as was contained' in it. Several years ago, when the headmastership of "the Timaru South School, of which tie was chairman at the time, became vacant, he was waited upon by one of the applicants, Mr Goldstone, bf Waimate, who was a Catholic, and who said he had heard that Mr Hawkey was biassed against Catholics. Mr Hawkey replied that lie was biassed to this extent —that all things being equal as between a Protestant and a Catholic, the Protestant would get his vote. But if the Catholic had profusionally a point of advantage over the Protestant, then he would vote for Ihe Catholic. Mr Goldstone thanked him for his candid reply, and expressed satisfaction that he knew Mr Hawkey's attitude on the question.
