WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council was held yesterday. Present : Messrs P. Studholme (chairman), J.Smilie, Hart, R. H. Rhodes, H. Elworthv, A. Walker and G. Lvali. The chairman welcomed Mr Smihe as a new member of the Council, in place of the late Mr Jas. Breen, and the Council passed a resolution of regret for the death of Mr Breen and of condolence with hi? family. Mr Smitie was appointed one of the Council's representatives on the Waimate Hospital Trustees in place of Mr Breen. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr Bremner reported on the progress made with the contracts in band in .the several ridings, on the work done by the Council** teams; and on the inspections made of works applied for. Of requests made for footpath extensions at St- Andrews, one had been attended to at a cost of 17s p. r chain 'school to police station); th.»fcWrs (towards the creamery) would be 195 chains and would cost 20s per chain. Hayes creek new bridge, on Xorth Bush. road,, was opene dfor traffic on the 3rd inst. r and the old foot-bridge was removed and re-erected at Garland's ford. In cases taken to the Magistrate's Court for neglect to clear gorse off roads convictions had been secured: and a list of nine persons to be' served with notices to clear was submitted.

The engineer and Mr Lyall reported on a T-equest by Elworthy Bros, for 5oro ; •work on Gordon's Taller road—(a bonndarv between upper and" Pareora ridings). Mr Lyail offered to have £2O spent by his riding on the two cuttings. The road. he considered, was as good as the lower riding- the cuttings not steeper. A petition received for a sufficient strir to be allocated for the further improve nient of the Wadhaorunga road, wa.s le ferred to the meeting on estimates. A petition for the removal of eight gate-' in six miles on the Takitu road, bet-weer Elephant Hill and Mr Deacon's. Upper Waihao. was supported by Mr Deacon. The engineer supported the petition. an<l explained that some gates were is dangerous- positions. ?-The chairman sog-gf-srted that the members of the ridin: should inspect and report before anything tr;i.-i done. Messrs Hart and Smilie sai> they would do so. The latter said he ob jeeted to gates as - Mr Walker would have gates removed at the request of a single ratepayer. The South Canterbury Hospital Board <jave notice of the levies for the current year. . •> The Clutha County Council asked for cooperation in getting the law altered to aliow local authorities to make their own valuations, ns cheaper than the Government valuation.—Reply to be sent that this Council had found the Government valuation much cheaper than making their own. The Southland County Council wrote, approving of the Model by-laws Bill, but ask-:-ig for support of a remit proposing •imt-ndniems. The Bill proposes that the by-laws shall be printed on calico and exhibited on every. road. This would be .uorniously expensive and unsatisfactory, and they suggested as an alternative an annual publication of the by-laws through tho newspapers. The Council will support hi) amendment. The reports of road rangers, and of the VVaihao Waterrace -Committee were read .uid adopted. SMALL BIRDS. It was resolved to purchase heads of <mall birds from Bth June next at- Is per dozen. Mr Walker asked for an engineer's report on Paul's road, to the river, and »Ir Hart for a plank for Clowe's Crossing, and these requests were agreed to. PAREORA BRIDGES. A petition was received from many r;ite>ayerj for a light- traffic bridge over the jittla Pareora hbove Holme station, at •Ivan's crossing.

Mr Elworlhy pointed out that some- of he petitioners were Crown tenants, and ho Government should be asked for a con:ribution.
