A woman aged about nineteen years fell into the harbour fropx the Quay street jetty last night under cimimstances thfrt were rather extraordinary. The accident happened between 11. and 12 o'clock and was first discovered by the Northern Company's, night watchman who ran on • board the Kanieri for a life belt, which he threw to the woman. She failed to secure the float, whereupon the nightwatchman ran up the wharf to apprise, the people on the Aupouri which was on the po,int of sailing. Hie second officer (Mr Adolplius Parris) heard the woman's screams, rushed on deck and picked up a heaving line. Mr Parris proceeded in the direction whence the screams came. The young Woman was struggling in the water and being carried under the wharf. Air Parris threw the coil of rope about her and pulled in the slack and the woman caught the rope with her hands. After about three minutes a crowd came down the wharf; one young: man jumped overboard and one of H.M.S. Pioneer's boats came to th# rescue. Both the young man and the young: woman were picked up by the boat" and landed safely at the man-o'-wa.r steps. Henry McLeod, employed/by a restaur-ant-keeper in Paniell, has been reported as missing since about 4 p.m. on the 21st Mav. McLeod bad been in ill-health and had recently come out of the hospital. He was paralysed in the right arm and seemed to be"; in low spirits when last seen. He is Z5 years of age.

Mrs Martin, wife of John -Martin, tailor, a very old resident of Napier, died suddenly this morning. She was well-known and highly esteeuvd. She was 76 years of age and with her husband had be°n living in Napier for 44 years. In 1905 Mr and 'Mrs Martin celebrated their golden wedding.
