TWO UP SCHOOL.

At the Magistrate's Court this- afternoon there was a sequel: of last, week's raid on an .alleged two-up! school in the city, one Svdnev Macnamara being charged ; with having kept .premises -.at. Abel street as a common ga'ming-sehool. : ■-'..-■•'.- . Allan Verae.,aged 20, employed as yt the telephone exchange, s said.that on the evening of May 'Bth.,he went to defendant's premises." About seventy men were there playing two-up. '■'. The game was in progress when witness left/ at 1.30. m" the morning. The players were seated round a ring; every half hour a shilling was collected from witness by Macnamara. Witness had been at the place fifteen or twenty times within a' period of three months. The game was sometimes played in the afternoon. Defendant acted as ringkeeper. Cross-examined witness said that he was not on the premises when the raid was made. He had previously made a statement to'a detective. .Tins detective had said that if witness made a statement his name would not be used in the matter. Counsel: Then you 'thought you could give someone else away without being found out and that you would, save your position.- - Witness : Yes. - Counsel: You had refused until he told you that. • Witness : Yes. •
Peter Twerica Kinsella, a carpenter, gave evidence that lie had. seen two.-up played on the premises. He did not see defendant. _ George- William*, a baker's driver, said lie had%ee;i two-up played-at ■ the room, but did not notice Maenamara. . Evidence was given by the. police concerning the state of the . room and the manner in which entrance was arranged. Defendant reserved his defence and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. On a charge of being found without- lawful excuse in a room kept as ti- common o-miiiiitr-housa the 65 men arrested in the raid last, week' were fined £5 each and costs. ' . " ■ -
