ATHLETIC.

HARRIER RUNS. The hearts of harriers were made glad yesterday afternoon at the beautiful weather" which prevailed, and the splendid condition of the country, in favour of this favourite sport. That considerable interest is now being manifested in cross-country running was evident from the large attendance yesterday. The Trinity Club held their recond run in the afternoon from the residence of Mr McCahon, North street. He has at all times displayed great interest and kindness in the welfare of this combination. The trail laying was entrusted to E. Drake and C. * Glanville, the paper leading the pack for a distance of close on 10 miles. Starting from North street, the hares took up Wilson street, into Wai-iti road, along the old North road, N from whence the track was continued close to the precincts of the quarry and golf links; making straight for Page's road, the hares beat right across the freezing works, the return journey being mlade via Benvenue cliffs, Caroline Bay, and Mill street. Arrived home, and a brush upj Miss McCahon invited the members to tea, which needless to say, was greatly appreciated. The deputycaptain (S. Anderson), on behalf of his companions and himself, returned thanks for the consideration shown them on this and past decasions by Mr McCahon- The latter, in. acknowledging the compliment, said it gave him pleasure to see so many present, and he would be glad to have them -back on some future date. Three cheers for the host closed an anjoyable afternoon. The South Canterbury Harrier Club held their first outing veste'rday from Caroline Bay. The day was beautifully fine for the sport; there was a large number of members present and the outing was in every way' a success. The Club were -the 1 guests of their president, Mr O. T. J. Alpers who, before a start was made, wished them every success for the season. The members were then photographed and the -trail-layers- sent out with the bags. The pack left a few minutes later. The countiy selected, allowed of a nice brisk run; "it struck off to the west from the Bay cliffs,, and on to the north, and formed a complete cirnnifc to the cliffs, thence back along the Bay to the starting point—the dressing sheds. The members, 25 in all, ran very well for the first- run, and a good view of the pack was obtained from the promenade. Mr'Alpers then entertained all at the tea room.", refreshments being supplied in abundance. This over, the captain, in a neat speech, thanked ;Mr Alpers for his kind hospitality, and on the call three cheers were given 1 . The first syllabus was distributed to members, this comprising outings from town and countiy, and a novice ' race from the Bay. The Waimate' harriers will be the guests of the local Club on the 23rd of May. During the afternoon a telegram wishing the Club every success was received from the late secretary. Considerable interest has been shown' since the formation of the Club last year, and the fact that about 30 active and honorary members have been elected this year, speaks for itself. The committee hope, that members will continue their enthusiasm by attending all the runs. Those who go to the trouble to treat the Club, must feel amply rewarded when there is a large muster..
