A PECULIAR STORY.

SON AND MOTHER IN COURT. r, >..., Per Presa Association. AUCKLAND, July 1. A peculiar story was told to Mr W. 6. Biddell, S.M., in the Police Court whta a young man named Percy Frederick Bennets was charged with failing to maintain bis mother, Kate Elizabeth Bennets. Mr Brookfield, who appeared for defendant, asked—"Had you any idea that you had a mother named Kate Elizabeth. Bennets," to which witness answered in the negative. Mr Brookfield explahiel that the Gis- ' borne police had adviscrl defendant for his own good, to come and meet the charge when it came on. Mr Brookfield : " Do you know anything about this woman being vour mother, except what she tellß you?" Witness: "No: nothing." Mr Riddell: "Does she give yon any proof?" I , . , Witness : " No; she didn't know me when she saw me fir«t. Witness added that he had to borrow! £lO from his mate to come to Auckland to meet the charge. Mr Bloomfield (for plaintiff): "Do you know Royal and Sydney Lance Benriete? Are they your brothers and claimed by this woman "as her sons. Witness: " Yes, I heard so yesterday.' Counsel: " What is your father's Christian name ?" , Witness : " He' was always called 'Dolf:'" ' ' ' " Where is he living?—ln Timaru. When did you leave him?-4About tfyree years ago.
