LEVELS COUNTY COUNCIL. IN THE MATTER OP THE MOTOR CAR REGULATION ACT, 1902, AND THE COUNTIES. ACT, 1886. NOTICE is Hereby Given that at a SPECIAL MEETING of the Council held on the 16th DAY of JUNE, 1906, it- was resolved that the said Council of the LEVELS COUNTY make (by way of special order) a by-law under the MOTOR CAR REGULATION ACT, 1902, and the COUNTIES ACT, 1886; the object and purport of which By-law are to regulate the use of Motor Cars on the roads andpublic places of the County apd therein in particular: (1) To require a competent person to be in charge of the Motor Car. (2) To require every Motor Car to . two independent brakes and to be capable (if exceeding in weight, •unladen, five hundredweight) of . travelling j backwards and to be in ' / a. condition not, to cause danger. ■ (3) To- prohibit travelling backwards : except for purposes of safety. ..- '•■ (4) To require the driver of a Motor Car when meeting or passing a; * vehicle or horseman ;bn a? highway having a fall or a river on one side thereof, to drive on the outside or river side of the ;highway and to warn the person he so meets ' to take the other side. (5) To require drivers to give audible warning of the approach or position of the Motor Car; ; .to. stop and render assistance on request; to stop or proceed cautiously in pursuance of signals given at night by persons in charge, of horses by motioning a lamp; to allow tc\ •persons in charge of horses the utmost width of the road; to signal before attempting to pass a horseman or vehicle. - (6) To prohibit reckless, negligent or dangerous' driving. (7) To impose a penalty of. not exceeding £5 for every branch of the by-law.

The said resolution will.be submitted for confirmation to a Special Meeting of the Council to be\ held at the Council Chamber, situate in Church Street, in the Borough : of Timaru, at 12 o'clock, noon, on WEDNESDAY, Ist AUGUST, 1906.
