P«r Press Association. * AUCKLAND, February 25. At the Police Court this morning no less than 14 charges of theft and false .pretences involving sums ranging from 7s to £6 ss, were preferred against a young man named William Alfred Nobes alias King. Chief detective Marsack said that the charges were the result of a long series -of false pretences, mainly by means of valueless cheques, and as it was oaecessary for many of them to be heard before the Magistrate, he would ask for a remand until Monday} Accused made no objection and the remand was granted. CHRISTCHURGH, February 23. Early" this evening a girl of nineteen years whose people reside at Sefton, gave birth to a child in an ontbuilding at the rear of a fishmonger's premises, St. Asaph street. Nurse Birss was sent for and removed the newly-born infant. The body was that of a fully-developed male child, and had evidently not been dead very long. The girl had been employed as a servant.
