United Press Association—Per Electric Telegraph*—Copyright, Received 10.58 p.m., February l{itli. CAPETOWN. February 12. The murderers of the police in the Richmond district and the Christianized taffirs belonging to Modi's tribe having abandoned their kraals and fled into the buih near the source of -Umkoma River, it w?K be difficult to bring them to justice. Three hundred and fifty Carbineers and? a battery of field artillery have gone to the scene of the disturbance.
The attitude of the natives is threatening. Small bodies of troops have been attributed in the country and niav pwiblv check the movement, but it is 'considered that more drastic measures are advisable. The trouble is connected almost equafiy with the ordinary hut tax and new pflil tax. 17
The only Imperial troops in Natal are 200 belonging to the Garrison RegimeiU stationed at Maritxburg. It.is thought that. Imperial troops ought ,to strengthen the garrisou towns and villages. *Ehe are unripe, which, is a-passible deterrent to an extended rising at present.; The natives, in other territory are unaffected by the unrest, but owing to fiho outbreak originating as above it is feaxjed that the Kthiopian movement is alreajlv a power, for mischief. The Cameron Highlanders from Pretoria are proceeding ;to Mavit/.burg. ; Ofticial information is hopeful that tin* outbieak will prove purely local.
