THE CHESS TOURNEY.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 2. '. At the conclusion of the eighth round the chess tournament was in a very interestrug stage. James had lost first place tlirough losing to Mason, while Barnes appears to have a very comfortable game from Freeman. The position at the end of the ninth round is as follows:—Mason won 7, lost 2; Barnes, 6 and 3; Grierson, 6 and 3; Miles, 5£ and 3£;. James, 5£ and 3£; Davies, 5 and 4; Edwards, 4£ and 4£; Rutherford, 3£ and ss; Jowitt 3 and 6; Kununer. 3 and 6; Freeman, 2£ and 6£; Kelling, 2£ and 6£.
