A poll to decide whether rating on unimproved values should be adopted in the borough of Petone was taken to-day, 311 votes being cast for the proposal and 112 against. Mr W. C. Kensington, Under-Secretary for Lands, has been appointed a member of the Land Purchase Commission. Archbishop Redwood, who returned yesterday from a trip to Europe, was to-night welcomed back to the archdiocese, and presented with an address and purse of 500 sovereigns. J CHRISTCHTJRCH, March 23. The arbitrators in the dispute between
the Tramway Board and tlie New Brighton Tramway Company have fixed the price, of •the company's property at- £7267. The company claimed between £16,000 and £17,000.
DUNEDIN, March 23. A strong gale, the first strong wind experienced for some months, spoiled the anniversaiy holiday to a large extent. A considerable number made their way to Waihola, where the Rowing Association's regatta was to be held, but the gale' continned all day, and no events were got- off. The Early Settlsrs' Association held a large gathering in the "evening, at which Lord Plnnket was present.
