THE PLAGUE MENACE. The health authorities consider the increase in plague infected rats serious. They propose a bonus of sixpence each on rats and a penny on mice. SENTENCED TO DEATH. OUara- was sentenced to death for the murder of his'wife at Surry Hills on November 19th. • THE FEDERAL MAILS. MELBOURNE, March 23. - The Federal Cabinet meets to-morrow to, it is understood, specially discuss the mail question. During the last few days negotiations have been proceeding *with the Orient- Company, who, it is understood, have giade another offer. -The PostmasterGeneral has had a further interview with Mr James Mills, managing director of the Union Company, with regard to the Vancouver service. The matter was discussed in all its bearings, including the substitution of Auckland for Brisbane as a port of call. .The accommodation of perishable cargo was also considered.
