TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The committees of the Borough Council .met last evening, when the following, among other business, was done : WATERWORKS. The Waterworks Inspector's report.— Since last meeting a number of applications for supplies had been received and completed, including the Dairy Factory and a motor supply to the Farmers' stores. A number of fire-plugs are leaking, and will be put right as soon as possible. The Swimming Bath had been let off and refilled. The 5-inch mains in Baker and Wilson streets have been lowered to the new street levels; and small pipes laid for a temporary supply. 2000 ft of i-inch pipes have been obtained, and prices invited for 50 casks of cement for water-race improvements. The reservoir is full and a good supply of water is being delivered. An additional hut or shed should be built on Mount Horrible, half way between the present huts, which are too far apart for present requirements. A blacksmith's forge and tools are required for repair of tools during repairs of race. Ordinarily the water-race men would spend much of their time grubbing gorse, but he proposed to get this work done otherwise, keeping his me:i on the improvement works. The Waterworks Committee decided to recommend (1) that the Inspector's report be adopted; (2) that the offer of the C.F.C.A. of 50 casks of cement at 14s 6d per cask be accepted ; (3) that the Gas Company be charged Is per 1000 gallons for water required to fill the new gasholder tank; (4) that the charge for temporary tap watersupply for' churches be £1 per annum. STREET WORKS.
The Works Committee, on the engineer's report, recommended: (1) That the temporary pipes in Bank street be lifted ; . (2) that the plan submitted for sleeping accommodation at the Fire station be adopted : (3) that the nightsoil cert offered by the late contractor at Christchurch be purchased ; (4) that, the drainage at the railway station be left to the engineer to arrange. Also: That re the ouestions of drainage between the Borouch and levels County, a committee be appointed to confer with the Levels County CouncP. Frontage on Strathallan Street: That the owners of property concerned be informed that the Council is advised that they are not compelled 1 to give a frontage to Strathallan itreet over the portion recently diminished in width ; but that the owners can acquire the frontage by purchasing the lnnd cutoff frnm the street, by paying the value fixed by the Cowi'l FINANCE.
The Finance Committee recommended that accounts presented and checked be passed for payment; and report that they have checked the statements of receipts and expenditure, and find that- the bank overdraft had been reduced to £3006; and that the sum of £990 of outstanding rates, etc., had been collected and banked during the past fortnight. SANITARY.
The Inspector nf Nuisances and Building Surveyor reported 'that since last report he had made 161 house to house inspections, and had giyen four notices to remedy nuisances In regard to fire escapes, he had visited 50 houses, where he had previously given notices to provide escapes. He had piven 98 certificates: in six cases escapes were oeinc made : 'and in fourteen cases the escapes may Be made soon : several persons seem careless about complving. Out of about 102 notices {riven. 82 were complied and 32 have complied and received certificates. One householder thinks he should be exempt, because his house is near to the brigade station. He had Pressed an adioinincr owner to clear corse off the upper end of Arthur street. During ln.st month he had. as Building Snrvevor. certified to seven n-nnlication* for new buildings and five for additions. He had also registered six do~s. the Works Committee recommend the adoption of rhia rpnort.
