ALICE HOLLANDER CONCERTS.

The second concert of the Alice Hollander Concert Company last night drew an audience o-f the same magnitude as the first, and ifc was notable that many attended for the second time. The company did their best to please, and the audience was as exacting as it was appreciative, every item being determinedly encored, and several of them more than once. Mr Farrell opened the concert witli a long " study " by Rubinstein, a task of memory and execution which must have required long and arduous practice to master. Both instrumentalists play their long selections from memory, and this is one of the marvels of the profession. Mr Farrell is a brilliant performer, but somewhat heavy-handed for perfectly satisfactory rendering of all classes of pianoforte music. Miss Hollander was in prood voice, and each of her numerous and widely varied items gained hearty and long continued ap-

plause and recalls. By special request Miss Hollander sang "Sunshine and Rain,'' and the request was fully justified. She also sang " On the Banks of Allan Water," and " Douglas Gordon," as encore pieces. In the former she was particularly successful, the plaintive song just suiting her. Another great success was " To the Angels," with 'cello obligate. A beautiful bouquet was sent to Miss Hollander during the evening' by some admirers in the dress circle. Mr McCay sustained the estimation previously -formed of his remarkable vocal powers. He succeeded well in everything he undertook, and was recalled again and again. "In the Cloisters," and " Because I love you," "Far Away," were particularly good, but his best was probably, "Oh, dry those Tears." That Herr Yollmar, the vio'lincellist, is a favourite, was shown by the applause which greeted him on his first appearance, and each of his items was warmly encored. The popular verdict is that this is the best- concert company that has ever visited Timaru. It was announced by Sir Bethune that the company will give 'a sacred concert inthe Theatre to-morrow evening at 8.15 p.m.. admission by silver com. We may safely anticipate a crowded audience.
