William Shiels, a stranger to the town, charged with cornmktUisj a, nuisance in a railway carriage, pleaded guilty'Sergeant Warrinu stated tli;it accused had beeil cautioned by the guard on swmmitting the offence a first time, but he repeated it. Accused said that fc*\ was drunk at the time, and had no recollection of committing the offence in the carriage, though he admitted- creating a nuisance, on the platform. His Worship said that he woulcl have to hear the evidence of the guard as to the occurrence.

Murdoch McLeod, charged with being found on licensed premises, he being a prohibited person, did not appear, but wrote a letter admitting the offence. Constable Willoughby proved the issue of the order.

Sergeant Warring said the offence took place"on New Year's Eve at the Club Hotel. The' accused had been locked up and dealt with for drunkenness. A fine of 10s was imposed. THROWING STONES.

Albert Kennett was charged with throwinn- stones to the damage of a person. Evidence was given by a boy that the accused threw stones without any provocation, and struck another boy on the eye. The accused said that the last witness called him insulting names, and he threw stones in retaliation. Another witness said that the accused bowled the stone, not meaning to hit the other' boy. He heard no names called. His Worship commented very strongly on the dangerous practice of stone-throw-ing, and imposed a fine of £1 or 14 days' imprisonment. COMMITTING A NUISANCE.

Six lads, charged with committing a nuisance in the Athletic Club's grand stand, were prosecuted by Mr Knubley, and defended bv Mr Ravmond. After hearing the evidence of the caretaker and Constables Dalton and Crawford, and the accused, His Worship said a very disgusting act had been committed, but there was no evidence against anv of the accused except one, though there was a strong suspicion that they all knew something more about it than thev had told. He hoped that they would "take a lesson from the case, and keep clear of the Athletic Grounds in future The cases were dismissed. ' MAINTENANCE.

Mrs Lahore v. James Lahore, an application for sureties for the payment of £1 a week towards the support of his Complainant gave evidence that defendant was in arrears. . Defendant stated that he was working as a labourer in Dunedin. It was absolutelv impossible for him to find sureties. Mf Rolleston suggested that the order for sureties be made, and it be left to the discretion of the complainant whether it was enforced or not. Mr Raymond asked that it be left to the Court to" enforce it. His Worship adjourned the case for a week to allow the arrears to be paid. If no paymefit was made sureties would have to be found.
