SMOKE CONCERT.
The Timaru Hockey Club held a very successful smoke concert in the Club Hotel last evening. There was a very good attendance, all the athletic clubs in Timaru being well represented. The president (Mr W. J. Cotterill), and vicepresident (Mr G. P. Wood), sent apologies for absence, both being indisposed, and His Worship the Mayor was unable to be present. Mr F. Tasker presided, making a capital chairman. A ] long toast list, interspersed with songs, was gone through, and the evening passed most pleasantly. The toasts were—" The King," proposed by the chairman; Mr Wright proposed "The President, Mr W. J. Cotterill," responded to by Mr P. Sealey; Mr Hendry, "The Vice-presi-dent," and Mr Dale responded; Mr G. Wilson, "The Timaru Reps.", Messrs E. and A. Lane; Mr A. Duncan proposed "Kindred Sports," and Messrs O'Leary and Thomas (football), D. Shaw (rowing), D. McDonald (cycling), Shrimpton (cricket), and Sinclair (billiards), responded; "Mr E. Lane proposed "Mr G. Wilson, the first secretary of the Hockey Club," and Mr Wilson replied; Mr Knight, " The Captain," and Mr F. Barcock responded; Mr A. Lane, "The Fire Brigade," and Captain Campbell and Secretary G. Hilton replied; Mr Tasker pro-' posed "The Mayor"; "The Hockey Club" was proposed by Mr D. Shaw, and replied to by the chairman; Mr W. Weir proposed " The Volunteers," and Sergeant Fraser (T.C.R.), and Mr Shrimpton replied ; Mr Fraser proposed " The Press," Messrs A. Lane and G. Wilson replying. The toast of " The Ladies " was ably supported by Mr D. Shaw, and well responded to by Messrs Sealey and Perks. Mr J. Davey proposed the toast of "Mr A. Duncan," who is leaving, Timaru, Mr Duncan replying. "The Host, Mr J. Dore," and " Musicians " (Messrs Weir, Bilton, and J. Jones) were proposed by the chairman. Songs were contributed by Messrs D. Shaw, R. Kennedy, Thomas, Wentworth, Perks, McDonald, and Jones, recitations by Messrs Knight and Duncan, flute solo by Mr Bilton, and instrumental selection by Messrs Gabites, Weir, and Bilton. Mr".Weir played the accompaniments to the songs, his services being much in demand, and highly appreciated.
