The Sydney schooner Envy put into Singapore, and Captain Strackan, who is accompanied by his wife and son, reported that he, his family, and the chief officer had several times on the voyage suffered from symptoms of poisoning. William Brodie, the cook, confessed that an Arab sailor gave him poison which was put into the food. The Arab was placed in irons, and next, morning was. found dead, having, committed suicide. Brodie was handed over to, the police.. FEMALE FANCHISE. In the Assembly the Women's Franchise Bill was read a second time by fil votes to 7. Received 1.3 a.m., August 23rd. THE WOMEN'S FRANCHISE BILL. The Women's Franchise Bill has been, read a third time by 56 against 18. Received 9.10 a.m., August 22nd.. REDUCED EXPENDITURE. ADELAIDE, August 22. The estimates of expenditure show a de- ' crease of £307,000 compared with the previous year due to the transference of several departments to the Commonwealth.. Received 0.15. a.m., August 23rd. THE RICARDO TRIAL.—VERDICT FOR PLAINTIFF. BRISBANE, August 22. Intense interest has been taken in the Ricardo case. The Court has been densely crowded throughout the seven days' trial. Counsels' and Judge's addresses occupied several hours. The Judge summed up strongly in favour of Colonel Ricardo. His Honour said that on every other occasion throughout the campaign he had shown great bravery, and was not likely to have shown the white feather when he was stuck in the fence. The weight of the evidence' was against his having uttered the words attributed to him on that occasion. Tho jury, after a four hours' retirement, re- * turned a; verdict for plaintiff, and awarded him £SOO damages, with costs. THE TRAM ROBBERS. MELBOURNE, August 22. The Government have offered £2OO reward, and the Tramway Company £IOO reward for the capture of the tram robbers. Received 1.30 a.m., August 23rd. THE WHANGAPE. NEWCASTLE. August 22. Sailed—Whangapo, for Wellington.
