WELLINGTON BEAT HAWKES BAY. Per Press , Association.' WELLINGTON, August 21. ..- The iriterprovincial. match between Wellington and Hawkes Bay -was "played on the Athlptic Park this afternoon, and resulted in. a win for Wellington by 12 points (four tries) to 3 points (one try.) The visitors nave a team of forwards who more than held their own with the Wellington pack, but their backs were weak, and to this weakness the home team owed their victory. ; Slattery, Wood, Adams, and Mclntyre scored for Wellington, and Hume for Hawkes Bay, none of the tries being converted. The Wellington men played very sluggishly, and appeared to be stale after their exertions against the New South Welshmen last "Saturday. DUNEDIN, August 21. Casey replaces Adam as full-hack, and White takes Buchanan's place at threequarter, while Burt replaces Matthews in the forwards. With these exceptions, the team to meet New South Wales will be the same as that which played last Saturday against Canterbury. SOUTHLAND BEAT NEW SOUTH WALES. INVERCARGILL, August 21. The weather conditions against the New South Wales team for today's match, and they failed to : score, the game ending, Southland, 17 points (4 tries and 1 goal) to nil. Bain fell all night, I and although the ground was., not in the worst condition, "there was" water over a
part to which the game often gravitated. A steady wind blew in line with the ground, and the visitors winning the toss, took advantage of it, and were expected to score. The local team battled against the wind; quite held their own, and Maley managed to score a try. In the second spell they put up four tries; Jacobs two tries, and Bain and Stead each one try. From.the latter E. Purdue kicked a goal. It was generally held that Bain should have been credited with another try. The play of the visitors was much admired, and had the ground been in better order, the scores would probably have been more equal. Hughes, Lindsay and W. A. Shortland did good work in the back division, and C. Shortland was prominent among the forwards. The result does not indicate the merits of the team, as the ground was very greasy, but it seems probable that Southland would have won under any conditions. Some of the visitors who were knocked about in the Wellington match stood out, and their strongest team was n»t in the field. Jacobs, Bush, j Maley, Purdue, Stead, and Jenkins were prominent for the home team. The : visitors gained golden opinions for their style of play, and the absence of protests and j wrangling. • ■
