DUNEDIN, August 20. At a meeting of the local committee of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants a resolution was passed strongly objecting to Clause 25 of the Companies Bill providing for the appointment of the Official Assignee as State und official liquidator of all companies which are wound up by the Court, and especially to the further amendments, proposed by Sir J. G. Ward providing for the auditing of accounts of all companies by the Government Auditor because of the'great injustice to practising accountants who have qualified in the profession by years of experience and 'examination, and whose business and living would be taken away and for other reasons enumerated. It was also resolved to request the Minister to delay any alteration | of the Companies Act as affecting mining companies until careful inquiries have been made and evidence taken from those qualifield to speak from experience of the working of the present Act. Mr Peter Barr was elected co-delegate with Mr William Brown to the annual meeting of the Institute in Wellington. THK i'ATKA SKAT. Fer Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 20. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of William Parker,' labourer oi tatea, against the return of Mr Haselden for the Patea seat in the House of Representatives ' r he grounds of the petition are—That after the poll was taken the Returning Officer wrongfully opened parcels of ballot papers and extracted the voting paper of Frederick Charles Saphir, of Taylorville, commercial traveller, and disallowed the vote which' had been -cast in favour of Mr Heslop; that after the poll the Returning Officer took out the paper of Arthur Nesbit, of Hunterville, who also voted for Mr Heslop, and disallowed it; that the deputy returning officer at Makirikiri closed the booth shortly after opening it, and it remained 1 closed throughout the day, and the returning officer failed to make any return; that the deputy at the Mangaonoho booth closed it during the dinner hour, and remained away for about an hour; that tin elector named John Williamson, on the roll as John Williams, was not allowed to vote at Hunterville, although he rightly claimed to be the person named " John Williams " ; that an elector on the roll as John Ferguson was not allowod to vote at Pukerimu; that both these votes would have been cast for Mr Heslop; petitioner therefore asks that the election be doclared void.
