"WHAT HAPPENED TO JONES"

■ — ♦ Mr Charles Arnold, who opens m Timaru to-morrow m -What Happened to Jones, when m South Africa initiated the fruit fund for the men at the front, and m the course of ah interview published m the Ballarat " Courier," remarked that the fruit baskets, which cost 3s each, were a most expensive item, as comparatively few were returned to Capetown. Recently he found out what became of them- Private Krygger, recently invalided back, called on him at his hotel to thank him for the kindness he showed the Australian soldiers, and said, among other things, "Those grapes were downright appreciated by us, and the baskets were very useful afterwards." Mr Arnold's face was a study, as he began to realise that he was m the verge of finding out what had become of those precious baskets which had caused him co mucii trouble. He soon learned and the expression of curiosity gave place to one of amusement when he was told that the " absentminded beggars " of the Australian regiment used them for rubbish receptacles m their tents. That was why there was be much difficulty m getting them back. Apropos of this, very stand and deliver tele^ grams had to be sent sometimes before the baskets }rere returned, and a correspond' ence over the wires would take place m this ■ form .- " Arnold to Kekewich : No fruil till baskets sent back," to which a prompi reply came, " Kekewich to Arnold : 15t baskets by to-night's train."
