, ♦ Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 14. The Prince of Wales, through the Governor, sent a cable thanking the people of New Zealand for their kind congratulations. April 15. Mrs Susan Armstrong, an old resident of Wellington for 40 years, mother of Mrs R, E. Bannister, died to-day. STRATFORD, April 14. The Minister of Education received a very hearty welcome here on Thursday. He was met at the train and driven m a carriage and four round the district, calling at several schools, and was entertained at a banquet m the evening. A painfully sudden death occurred here yesterday, of Harrison Gibson, inventor of Gibson's patent brand, He died m bed of heart disease. His daughter was married on the previous day, and he attended and gave her away. CHRISTCHURCH.. April 14. At the inquest on Baker, the tram guard, the evidence showed that his foot was madly crushed by a car going over it. There were signs of lock-jaw and the leg was amputated, but too late to arrest the malady. The verdict was accidental death, no blame attaching to anyone. DUNEDIN, April 15. In the interprovincial model yacht races nine started m the final heat, which resulted as follows : — Mr Brittenden's Huon Belle 1, Mr Paterson's Eclipse 2, Mr Findlay's Heather Belle 3. Dove's (Lyttelton) Motto and Mr Pearce'a boat represented Christchurch m theiioal. INVERCARGILL, April 14. A large stable belonging to Mark Shaw was destroyed by fire at Bayswater. Four valuable horses perished and a number of farm implements were destroyed. The stable was insured for £300, but the loss considerably exceeds this. H. Jennings, late guard,died at Lumsden. It is reported that he took roughon rats. The Governor has received a telegram that the Honourable Mr McKenzie is able to be up a little occa&loaally, and is m excellent spirits.
