The team picked to. represent South Canterbury againt Auckland is reckoned to;be the best that has played to represent this Union for some time. The backs, who average list 61b, are sure, fast, good kicks, and splendid tacklers, and the forwardsare the heaviest that have ever played for South Canterbury, averaging exactly 13st, and with this weight they will be hard to push. As a rule forwards of this weight are slow, but not so with the present selection. They are a long way above the average m speed. The following is a short description of the players :—
M. Buchanan (T), 12st 41b— Has not played as full back this year, but has proved himself a reliable tackier, and good kick as centre three-quarter for the Timaru Club ; also takes the ball well.
Alf Boys(T), 10st6lb, wing three-quar-ter—Fast, dodgy runner; fair tackier, and good place kick. A. Shallard (W), lOst 61b, centre threequarter — Good tackier, and splendid kick, either drop, punt or place ; very dangerous m his opponents' quarters on account of his clever potting. Harold Curtis (A), list 71b, wing three-quarter— Good runner, takes and passes well and is also a good kick. Upton(A),l23t6lb,five-eighths-Should prove himself the bestofthe baeksowing to his weight and speed. He should, however, be careful not to run his wing men too close to the touch line before passing. J. Helean (T),lost 61b, half-back-Has always proved himself perfectly reliable and will no doubt give his backs as much work as they want; good at stopping rushes and cleverly screw punts. • = - • T. Ker (T), 13st 41b-Grand man 1 for front of scrum arid No. 1 on the line out; very good on dribbling rushes but should be careful not tp loaf off-side. .
A. Hart(W), 12st 81b— Another good man for the front of scrum ; does a power of work and reckoned to be one of th<? most hard workers m the team.
C. N. Macintosh (T), 13st lOlb-A very old representative : has a thorough knowledge of the game ; always does his share of work; a handy maii for any position.
Baird f A), 14st 81b— A good man on the line out; pushes hard m tho scrum, andiis fast at following up. F. Shallard (W), list 101br-a reliable worker m scrums, good tackier, and always on the ball.
Finn (W), 13st 61b -a young player ; good worker m scrum and very good on line out ; should show, up well. R. D, Stewart (W), I4st 61b— One of the best forwards m the. team ; very fast m the open ; good dribbler, and hard to take the ball off m scrum ; rather inclined to loaf if not kept at his work. Healey (A), list 61b, wing forwardVery fast m the open; gets on his opponents' backs smartly ; rather inclined to get off-side. J, H. Gardner (T), wing forward— A dangerous man to opponents' backs ; very fast m the open, and thoroughly understands the wing play, but should be a little careful over off-side play. (By Telegraph.)
