THE RAILWAY EMPLOYEE'S SOCIAL.
The railway employees of Timaru and surrounding districts, held their nnnual social m the Assembly Rooms on Thursday last, the first part taking the form of a concert, the greater number of the items being given by railway folks. Songs were contributed by the Misses Robertson and McCullough, Messrs Smith, McCullough and Master Kane, a banjo duet by Miss and Mr Robertson, violin solo. by Master Kane, a clog dance and sailor's hornpipe by Mr Joe West, selection (violin and piano), by Messrs Owers, and corne£ solo by a railway guard. A railway minstrel troup gave some humorous sketches, Mr Callan being the principal, ably assisted by Messrs Gough, Truman, Hart, and Rogers, Messrs Mason and 801 l playing the accompaniments. The hall was cleared for dancing at about 10.30 p.m., and to the strains of Messrs Owers (violin), and M.ason'a (piano), music dancing was kept up with much spirit ti11 4.30a.m. Messrs Cowan and Bracefield officiated asM.Cs. Thecateringwas m the hands of Mr Sutherland, and the spread was all that could be desired. During the latter part Miss Edwards and Messrs Hall and Oallan rendered songs m capita^ style. The hall was most tastefully decorated and reflected great credit on those who gave their time to this arduous part of the business. The different coloured signal lights looked very pretty among the ferns and evergreens, and the semaphore signals were a novelty. The banner (kindly lent by the Christchurch Railway Servants' Society) was very pretty, having . hand-painted railway engines and railway scenes from different parts of Canterbury worked on it. Two models of railway engines, the work of Mr A. W. Taylor, Goods Department, Timaru, were splendid specimens of handicraft, and were much admired. All classes of railway employees were well represented from Makikilii to Orari. All enjoyed themselves thoroughly and are already looking forward for the one next year.
