(By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, May 31. This morning notice of appeal was lodged by the local Inspector of Factories, Mr H. Ferguson, against the decision given by Mr Northcroft m the cases heard at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday last against Henry Sprouston Badeley, for alleged breach of the Shops and Shop Assistants' Act. The hearing will take place at the Supreme Court about the 19th June. There are about 20 cases for trial at the criminal session of the Supreme Court. The offences are of the usual character. There are several oases of horse-stealing, cattle-stealing, and sheepstealing. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 31. Large numbers of persons are visiting the petroleum works to see the oil being pumped, and syndicate shares of £100 are being taken up liberally. It is said a company with a capital of £50,000 is to be formed m Sydney. The present well yields from 30 to 40 barrels of 40 gallons each a week, as it atjpresenftstands. The Magistrates Court was occupied all day hearing the case against Isabella Laws, charged with forging two receipts for £110 5s and £277 178 by means of which, she procured moneys belonging to the Good Templars, of which her husband was secretary. Accused was. commited for trial. Mr McGowan, Commissioner of Taxes; met the Chamber of Commerce this evening. He answered questions relating to the income tax assessment forms and explained them. A motion was passed expressing satisfaction generally with his explanation, especially with the part relating to the secrecy of the returns. WELLINGTON, May 31. At a meeting to-day it was resolved that steps be taken to secure the incorporation of athletic bodies, and that the Premier be asked to receive the members of the athletic conference as a deputation to lay before him the proposals which it was desired should be given legislative effect to. The conference was called by the New Zealand Rugby Union. DUNEDIN, May 31. The Dunedin Assembly of the Knights of Labour passed the following resolutions :— " (1) That the present abnormal rise m the local wheat market is resulting m large financial transactions, but farmers will not derive any benefit, and that the state of the wheat maiket outside the colony does not warrant the prices. (2) That m view of the general fall m the value of produce and the decrease of incomes of all connected with agricultural and commercial pursuits, the Government be asked to initiate a gradual reduction m the salaries of all Civil Servants receiving £200 and over, including the servants of Education Boards." John Ramsay, aged 74, residing at Kaikorai Valley, dropped dead last night, it is supposed from apoplexy.
