SHOT AND SHELL PRACTICE.

«► The C Battery's annual competition for the Government ordnance prize was held yesterday evening. Two 9-pounder Armstrongs were placed m position on the beach a little to the north of the Belford Mills at a distance of about 1600 yards from the target^ which was erected on the beach afc Patiti Point. A. strong and gusty wind was blowing from the left rear, ana the light was bad. Under these circumstances very good practice was not to be expected. Three detachments competed, each firing 5 shots. The competition was won by the No. 1 detachment (Corporal Kice and Bombardier Livingstone) with a score of 6 points: No. 3 detachment (Bombardier McCullough and Gunner Allen) 5 points ; No. 2 detachment (Corporal Boys and Bombardier Craigie), 4 points, The target on being brought m was found to have suffered, but not bo severely as usual, one reason being that no shrapnel shell were fired. After the competition three shots were fired at the floating target used by the Navals on Thursday. The third shot obtained the " short bracket" at a range of about 1150 yards, but it was too dark to continue the practice,
