(By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, January 11. The Hon. Mr Cadman proceeds to Coromandel to-day, thence through the Upper Thames overland to Ruatoki. upon the invitation of the Uriwera chiefs. A meeting will be beld there on the 22nd, when the question of surveys and prospecting m Uriwera will be considered. Mr Cadman will be accompanied by Mr Gordon of the Mines Department and Mr McKay, Government geologist. John Sleeney is reported as missing from Helensville. He was last seen on Wednesday afternoon on the swing bridge. The river is being dragged. Mr Hone Heke, M.H.R., addressed his native constituents at Helensville, and spoke strongly against the native land legislation. He received a vote of thanks and confidence. He has been asked by the Dargaville and Thames native? to address them on the subject. Mr Cadman left to-day for Coromandel. He will go from there to the Thames, and afterwards to Ruatoki, m the Uriwera Countiy. WELLINGTON, January 11. The Hon. Mr Garrard, Minister of Public Instructlonof New South Wales, arrived last night from Napier. He goes on south by the Mararoa this afternoon, and will be a through passenger by her to Melbourne. Captain Allman, nautical adviser to the Government, and Mr Hay, of the Public Works Department, are to report upon the most suitable site for the erection of a lighthouse on Cape Kidnappers on the east coast. Between 500 and 600 applications have now been received under the cheap money scheme, and of these the superintendent has marked more than 400 for favourable consideration. Applications continue to come m at the i % ate of 50 a day. The total amount of advances applied for is between £400,000 and £500,000. A large section of the public appears to have overlooked the fact that since the beginning of the year postage on newspapers for the United Kingdom and foreign countries is gauged by weight, and it is stated that of 6000 newspapers despatched by yesterday's English mail from Wellington, fully one half were deficient m postage. The Mines Department has been advised of a judicial decision at Home which will have great influence on the mining industry of the colony, inasmuch as it will set aside patent rights under which royalty is charged for the application of cyanide of potassium to the treats ment of gold and silver ore. Mr Gordon, Chief Inspector of Mines, considers the abolition of royalty will enable many mining companies to cany on at a profit that have hitherto failed to obtain any adequate return. Two township blocks m the celebrated Awarua block will be submitted to auction on the 13th March. The experimental shipment of timber for street-paving blocks is to be supplied by the Kauri Timber Company, Auckland, whose tender has been accepted by the Government. The Department of Industries has been advised that the timber from the Kauri Timber Company is being tried at Woolwich arsenal for use m the construction of gun carriages and ammunition boxes. The experimental tests have shown that the tensile strength of New Zealand kauri timber is nearly equal to thatof the best English oak, while its weight and cost are only about half those of oak. The Government have not stipulated that Auckland should be made the port of call for the Vancouver service, but left it open to the contractors to choose Wellington or Auckland. The statement that a substantial subsidy has been offered is a mistake. The colony will ?ay its proportion of the cost. The ostmaster-General is averse to any branch line to Fiji, and thinks that if the Vancouver service is used it must be by large steamers touching at New Zealand ports. By direction of the Minister for Labour a volume is just published containing the text of all the labour laws of New Zealand, with extracts from other Acts bearing on them. NELSON, January. 11. At a special meeting of the City Council to-night petitions were received m favour of Weduesday afternoon, also m

favour of Saturday, for the half-holiday. The fofhier containing the most signatures, it was ultimately resolved unanimously that Wednesday be appointed the weekly half-holiday. A girl named Nalder, aged about 12, was seriously injured tins afternoon, being accidentally shot through the jaw and neck by a lad with whom she was playing, and who was holding a pea rifle. CHRISTCHURCH, January 11. At the inquest at Lyttelton on Reid, the jury returned a verdict of suicide, and commended the police for their perseverance m searching for the body. DUNEDIN, January 11. Two seven-roomed houses on Anderson's Bay Road, owned and occupied by Mr John Shannon, were destroyed by fire this morning, caused by. the upsetting of a kerosene lamp m a bedroom. The insurances were £400 on the houses and £230 on the furniture, both m the Standard. The Minister of Lands had meetings yesterday with the Runs Classification Commissioners and the Land Purchase Commissioners. He leaves to-morrow for Wellington. Next month he speaks at Dunedin, Naseby, and Palmerston, replying at the latter place to his critics. Richard Green and Daniel Joseph McGuire were committed for trial for entering an auctioneer's stove. "H.M.S. Royalist stenm_ed up to Dunedin to-day, and was berthed at the wharf where the members of the harbour board paid a visit to Captain Goodrich. The prolonged dry weather having rendered water scarce, the corporation are now tiying to keep down the dust by pumping water from the bay. INVERCARGILL, January 11. At the request of Archbishop Redwood and Bishop Moran, the Education Board have decided to authorise its inspectors to examine Catholic schools m the district, provided they could overtake the work.
