The result of the ballot so far is against the strike The Hetton miners did not come to a decision last night and the directors have granted them until noon to-day for a final answer. Affairs at Newcastle have taken a turn for the worse. Although other returns j have to come m, the ballot at present I shows— fcr a strike 1120, against 714. Under the rules a two-thirds majority is required. Owners declare that they are I indifferent whether the men strike or not as they can obtain plenty of free labour. The Hetton miners have given no answer to the management, who announce m consequence that they will begin work on Monday with free labour. The Wallarah miners have struck owing to the enforcement if a reduction m the hewing rates. (By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, January 11. The Trades and Labour Council have passed a resolution protesting against the Government of New Zealand being a party to the proposed treaty with Japan. The employment of coolie labour on tho Union Co.'s steamers was considered, but further discussion of the matter was postponed.
