SERIOUS FIRE AT TEMUKA.

At about a quarter past 1 o'olook yesterday morning, a fire broke out in the workshop at the baok of Mr Taogney's boot shop, Temuka, and by the time the brigade had turned out the flames had obtained such a bold that littlo could be done except in the direotion of checking the flames from spreading to adjacent buildings. 3he fint to givt tha alarm was Mr William Brewer, who oocupieß premises opposite Tagney'a He was awakened by the glare in bit bedroom. " In epite of every effort the fire obtained a strong hold of Mr Briwn'a showroom, and thenoe spread to the main building. Only a comparatively few pounds' worth of goods were saved, and by 3 o'clook Mr Tangney's shop, a shop and residence (unoooupied),adj lining and Mr Brown's store, were completely destroyed. The Walliagford Hotel was in dangor for eomo time, but fortunately there was no wind. Mr Soannell, the proprietor, took the precaution of having baths of water placed in every, room, and mustered his serran's aad boarderj at the first alarm. Blankets wore suspended from the parapet of the hotel, and kept well soaked with water. Although the hotel suffered no damage by fire a little was done by water, which was unavoidably slopped about. The brigade worked assiduously aad there were plenty of volunteer/a who did good service. Messrs Armitaga, JJann, Surridge, Bates, Preddy, Buxtor, Lee, Qsz j, White and olhors rendered excellent service, and Constables Eurke and Egan kept good order amongst the crowd. As far as can be ascertained there was no insurance on Mr Tangney'B shop, nor upon the adjoining premises, all of which belong to Mr Brown. Mr Tangney had £300 insurance upoa his stook, and there was some insurance upon Mr Brown's shop and -stock, but the actual amount is not yet known. His lots will be a very heavy one. Bis books and prinoipsl papers were kept in one of Milner'g safes bricked id, but when this was removed from the building, the door was found to be fuoed, so that the condition of the contents is unknown. Mr Brown's premises were Borne of the first erected in Temuka, and were at one time ocoupied by Mr Copostake, and afterwards by tho late Mr B Turnbull.
