THE GOVERNMENT AND THE POLICE.
— ■■ — • (By Tblb&baph.) OHRISTOHUBOH, Bbptbmbbb 26. A letter has been received by the Canterbury Liberal Association from the Commissioner of Police m reply to a communication from tbo Association. Tbe Commissioner itated that tbe police themselves made no complaints as to the present sys* tern of transfers and promotion, but if the Association would furnish him with specific cases the matter would be ec quired into. It was reoolvad "That the Commissioner be informed that if a commission of enquiry be set up there will be plenty of evidence of dissatisfaction and injustice m the police force, but without suoh com* misasion tbe polioe are debarred from making complaint or giving ovidenoe, and the oommiltee consider that as complaints have been repeatedly pressed under the notice of tho Government, particularly by the Dunedin Social Beforji Association, the reply of the Government is simply evading the question."
