Amphion has returned to Tangier. A GREAT CYCLONE. Washington, September 23. A cyclone, two hundred yards m width, devastated a tract of country m lowa and Minnesota two hundred miles long. The Dutch Government are spending £1,000,003 m strengthening the defences of the country. SHOCKING ACCIDENT IN A SCHOOL. Romk, September 23. The roof of a school m Naples collapsed and twenty children were killed. The majority, however, escaped unhurt. MILITARY PREPARATIONS. The Italian Government intend| to spend £1,000,000 upon the substitution of omokeless for ordinary powder and m strengthening the artillery. MADAGASCAR. Pakis, September 22. The Journal des Debats says that the French m Madagascar are constantly robbed and persecuted. London, September 23. The Malagaßys are importing large quantities of weapons and explosives from England. THE VICTORIAN ELECTIONS. The Times, writing before the full results of the Victorian election were known, eaid that Patterson's defeat was not unexpected. It is a complete instance of falling between the two stools of Protection and Freetrade. THE GERMAN POLES. Bbrlin, September 23. The Emperor of Germany, replying to a Polish addrees, said that be could not approve of the conduct of a'section of the Poles. He warned them that he would view with favour only those who completely regarded themselves as Germans. THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE.
