TO THE BDITOB OF TBB TIMABU HEBALD Slß—Beferring to Mr. Jno Maloolmson's letter m this morning's Eerald, the substance of the false statement mentioned by Mr Solomon was that Dr Lovegrore was not at home, the faot being tbat he was at home, and had been applied to by Mr Malcolmson to sign the dooument, but bad refused to do, so. I took that statement down m writing, from Mr Grandi himself m his own words before the hearing of the oase, and Mr Solomon's observations were based upon it. I have seen Mr Grandi again tbis morning on the subject,: and he repeats that the appended statement is perfeotly correct. I am, etc*, Cbas. E. Hassell, Clerk to Me"™ Perry, Perry and Kinnerney. Timaru, 21st Sept, 1894. (Copy.) "J J Grandi states—On 28th of August last Malcolmson brought papers ro lioense of Olub Hotel to me. Tbey were already signed by Mr Gray. One was signed by Sergt.-Maj.r McDonald certifying to the fitness of, T Wederell to hold a publioan's license. Mai* oolmson told me that he had been to Love* grove'e to get him to sign the paper, bit that he was not at home. They therefore oame to me. I have since ascertained that Lovegrove was at home but refused to sign. Wederell was present with Maloolmson but did not say anything. The printed form was made out m Gray end Lovegrove's names. Lovegrove's name Was crossed out and mine inserted and I initialled the alteration. I did not read the papers. Maloolmson took all th* papers away with' him. Ido not know where they are now. Malcolmson had three papers, one printed one, one written one (signed by Sergeant Major MoDonald), and one with the stamp of the Crown Brewery upon it. When the dopu.nen.t was signed by me Captain Wray was not m Timaru. I thought he should bave signed it and that we were aoting for him. (Signed) " Jko. J. Gbandi." ,
