West, the cashier at Anthony Hordern's big establishment m George Street, shot a salesman, named Liddle, dead. Liddle was annoying Weßt m Borne way, and the latter pointed a revolver at him. The weapon went off —West alleged accidentally— with fatal results. RAILWAY DEFICIT. Melbourne, September 18. The Bailway Coramisaionera iv their annual reportdiscloße a deficit of £345,000. CABLE-LAYING. Brisbane, September 18. The cable steamer Francois Arago has, returned to Bundaborg. The cable waß laid half-way between Noumea and Australia, but it was deemed advisable to make fresh soundings before completing the work. Close to this coast the water was found to be two and a half miles deep. A fresh surrey, however, resulted m the discovery of a capital bottom at a satisfactory depth. The steamer will begin paying out the Australian end to-day, sod is expected to finish on Thursday.
