"• i (By TB_.nGß_.rH.) } CHRISTOHUROH, Oct. 25. ' The publio enquiry into the management ' of tbe Institute for Deaf Mutes at Humner j was opened to-day at Sumner before Mr W. ' H. Brabant, the " Resident Magistrate of ■ Wanganui, and Mr J. Colborne Vool, secre- ' tary of tbe Board of Education. ' j A letter from Mr H. S. Fißb to the | Minister of Kducation wob rood, reiterating ' ' tbe charges mede by Mr Fish m the House against the management of the Institute. A ' telegram from Mr Fish was read, stating that i he had no evidence to give, and pould not bo present or represented. He suggested that Mr Crofts, formerly teacher m the Institute, should be examined, and that tho Christohuroh members »nd Mr Tanner be consulted. j The Rev. W, J. Habens ottended, and 1 gave evidence to the eijfa_tt, that tbe Institute was satisfactorily conducted. The Commission will inspect tha . jjslituto to-morrow, end reoume taking evidensa «n Thursday. It was announced that Mr Van Ae.h, director of the Institute, had notified tho Oovernment that after this year he will uot undertake the boa-rding of pupils
