HOTEL BARS.
g -■ The following is taken from tbo Dunedin Star of Friday last, and is parb of the report of the meeting of the City Licencing Commiltee meeting ; — Xho ohairmftn : Tho license for Wain's Hotel is granted on the understanding that thero is to be only one bar. Mr Solomon stud that Mr Palmer wished him to mention this matter. There eeeir.ed to be some misunderstanding about Wnin's. He (Mr Solomon) would like to point out that there was only one bar m this house at tho present time. The bar m respect to which the licenso was granted was at tho back of tho house ; but ho would like to ea ! l the attention of llvj bench to the fact that there was no such thing as a license to a bar. A publican's license was grauted for the house, not for a bar, A bar was the place m a house which opened directly on to the public thoroughfare, and bo would repeat that according to the legal definition there bob only ono bai 1 m Wain's Hotel. Their Worships would see tba' there was nothing to prevont a hotelkeepor from having m every room m his That was not a bar within tho meaning of the Aot. The chairman : The application ie for Princes Bnd Manee streets. Tbo committee have refused a second bar to tho London Hotel, and thoy cannot Bee their way to treat this house m any other way. It is the eamo for one oa for another. We are- quite agreeable to allow the licenso for Wain's, but will not allow two bars — one m Princes street and one m Maneo street. We will not allow the Manee street one. Mr Solomon : You grant the publican's lioonae for Wain's Hotel, The chairman : Quito bo. Mr Solomon would like to point out that thero waß nothing to prevent Mr Palmer from keeping tho two bars opon. In doing so he would he acting within hia righto. The ohairman : You must clearly understand that this liconse is granted on tho understanding that thi>re is only one bar. Mr Solomon said ho must repeat that that was not according to law. 'Xhe committee had no power to grant a conditional license. What Mr Palmer asked for was a publican's license. The chairman : Yea ; and tho license ie granted, but aubjeot to thero being only ono bar. You must understand that. Mr Solomon : I cannot undertake to say what Mr Palmer will do. I take the license bb you give it. Mr Palmer, cannot, of course, go bojond bis rights. The ohairman : If Mr Parkor or any other gcntlfiuißn nets contrary to the wishes o£ tho committeo, thoy havo their romedy, and can tuke it into their own hands.
