. — * (Br Telbobaph.) AUOKLAND. Jtjne 1. The Auokland North Licensing Committee to-day granted renewals to a large number of hotels. Tho chairman expressed surprise at the complaints made regarding Sunday trading, and trading after hours, and stated it waß the committee's intention to assist the police to put down both, and also to adhere to ten o'clock closing. The committee declined an application that the United Service Hotel, which adjoins the Opera Houee, and m a principal part of tho city, should be permitted to remain opon till 11 o'clock at night. Thoy stated that tho committeo would grant 11 o'clock licenses if tho law were altered so as to provido punishment if the houses were kept open after 11, but m the present state of the law, 11 o'clock licenses meant that tbe house was kept open till 12. WELLINGTON, June ',l. Tho newly-elected licensing committeo for Onslow borough, granted a license to a now houae wbioh had been rejected by tho old committee. DUNBDIN, June 1. Tho Maori Hill Licensing Committee, iv granting a twelve months' renewal to tho only licensed houee m tho diatrict, passed a resolution ''notifying tbat at the next annual meeting the houee would bo closed, on the ground that it is not required m tho neighbourhood.
