were thon renewed m oil caeeß for tho your, foreloveu o'clock, lighting bb hitherto. Tho license to the Clarendon Hotel however was granted subjeot to n special condition. Tho chairman rend from a police report that a. now building was required, tho papering and Bcrinjming wore m a very bad condition at tho tiroo of inspection. Tho liconseo however said he would have t'-.o houso ropniTQtJ, roDupered and paiutcu lnsidu and out by the duto of the annual meeting otherwise the premises were clean. Sergeant-Major Hnson said ho inßpeoted tho home again on Tuesday and found that Mr Mooro had gone to considerable eipenso inside and out. Somo more paporing was required yet, and the back premises were not satisfactory and he did not know what could be done to them oioept rebuilding. It wbs for tho committee to say whether anew house should be demanded. If the house were m a tovru whore woodon buildings prevailed it would bo reckoned good for nine or ten years yet ; but tho committee had insisted upon the rebuilding of tho Boyal, which was not m muoh worse condition. Cn that decision ho felt bound to report that a new building was required, though if the house woro m Temuka or Geraldine it would be considered good for many years. Tho ohairman, addressing the licensee, said tho committee had talked it over and had come to the decision to grant tho license this year on condition that tho f urthor ropairs mentioned by tho sergt.-major were carried out, and that a new building be erected before tho next annual meeting. The committee had for some time been of opinion that the house should be rebuilt, but aa the licensing committees were only elected for one year they could not enforce any decision founded upon such an opinion. Tho law had however been altered ; at tho noxtolection acommittoe would ba chosen for three years — an amendmont which the committee considered extremely wise — and the new committeo could enforce any decision about rebuilding, by taking away a lio.viso if their decision was not complied with. M:ey were of opinion that the hon*e should bn entirely reinstated, and would place upon record that if they wore members of ihe next committee thoy would insist upon a new housu next year. That is to say, that tho whole of tho presont building must bo demolished and a new one built, according to plans to ho approved at on intervening quarterly meeting, by tho date of the next annual meeting. This opinion would be recorded for tbo information of tho next cominilteo. Mr White appeared for tho lieoaaeo of the Ship Hotel, and applied for and was granted a second bar. Mr Mason, m conclusion, said he found tho houeeß very clean. He did not like to particularise but Bomc of them were* m splendid ondition, m fact they W6re so generally.
