♦ FRIDAY'S FIRE ALARM. TO THE EDITOR OF THB TIMABTJ HKBAIB. Sib — Your report of the fire on my premises being incorrect I wish it altered as follows :— The Gas Company sent a man to take the meter out of my empty shop (late Carey, boot' maker's). After disconectingandbeforehecould cap the pipe the escaping gas caught tho candle he was using, and set fire to the woodwork. The man wua alone, and finding he could not master the fire made for the fire-bell not telling acy of ua. My son saw the fire through the window, came and told me, I rushed with a bucket of water and Mr Vine brought more and threw a wet rag over and around the ga> pipe, and it was soon out ; — a very na.'row escape.
