THE TARIFF PROPOSALS.

The Chamber of Commerce to-day unanimously passed a resolution to the effect that the existing Customs Tariff is sufficiently ! protective, nnd that any additional revenue needed from tho Customs should be by rovenue duties only. NELSON, Juke 1. At a meeting of tho Kelson Chamber of Commerce to-day, tho tiriff proposals were considered. It was resolved — (1) Dint tho chamber recognises tho gravity of the position m which the Treaßuror unds himßelf, and commends his action m proposing to provide for tho deficit by increased taxation in-.-tead of carrying to thaperiinncnt debt. (2) That the chamber considers the proposed duty of 1 per cent a primage highly objectionable method and suggests an additional duty on sugar or other merchandise instead. (3) That it approves of the uniform scale as defined for the collection of duty on case Bpiritß, but thinks the duty should still be paid on actual strength both on bulk and case spirits. (4) That tho Chamber strongly protests against tho merchants being called on to give bonds for possible duties to be levied seeing that such duties if levied will be practically irrecoverable on intervening business done. (5) That it approves of tho duty imposed on imported green fruits, pulp nnd preserved fruits. At a meeting of the Nelson Fire Brigade held to-night it was resolved to Btrongly protest against the imposition m the tariff of a duty on fire brigado hose or any other appliances necessary for the extinction of firo ; also that other firo brigades throughout the colony bo asked to co-operate m opposing this duty. INVEROARGILL, June 1. The Chamber of Commerce have appointed a committee to consider tho new customs tariff, and report at an early date.
