LICENSING COMMITTEE.

A meeting of tho nowly elected Licensing Committee for Tiniaru was held yesterday at noon. Present — Mcssm JS. Q-. Kerr, E. G. Stericker, and W. C. Beswick. On the motion of Mr Beswick, secondod by Mr Stericker, Mr E. G. Kerr was ro-elected chairman. Tho police report on licensed houses was very satisfactory. The inspector had appended a memorandum recommending tho compulsory use of firo escapes m every hotel. The inspector verbally recommended Carmault's fire escape. Tho committee recognised thj importance of the case ; but, m order not to burden tho hotel-keepers unduly, they would furthereonsider the matter, and get moro information. When they decided upon a system they would mako the adoption of it a condition of obtaining a license. Inspector Broham drew tho attention of the committeo to tho inoperative character of tho Licensing Act m regard to Sunday-trading, supplying intoxicated or prohibited persons &c. Mr Lynch, on behalf of the Licensed Victuallers Association objected to one or two statements of the inspector. The committeo endorsed tho remarts of the Inspector as to tho need for a remodolling of tho law. TBAN3VBBS. Tho license of W. F. Brown (Qrosvcnor) was allowed to bo transferred to J. Meiklo ; the license of Charles Green (Ship Hotel) to W. F. Brown. The committeo thon rose.
