Bell, tho Agent-General for Nevr Zealand, has received over fifty applications for the chief commissionership of thß railway board. The selection will be made shortly. POSTAL AFFAIRS. The postal department have arranged that the colonial mails via San Francisco, shall be despatched from here on Saturdays m future, instead of Wednesdays as heretofore, thus saving three days. Owing to the faster service m the Atlantic, the Victorian Government is urging the Poßtal Department to permit the departure of colonial mails from Adelaide on Fridays instead of Mondays, so as to obviate the necessity of running trains on Sundays. AUSTRALIAN RUBIES. Mr Pearson, who brought Homo the South Australian rubie3 states that a powerful syndicate have offerei to purchase tbe McDonnell Company ruby mines m Australia. The company offer £200,000 one-half, of the money to be paid m cash and the remainder m shares. The decision of the company is awaited.
