GERALDINE STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

The mid-winter meet of the Geraldine Racing Club was held on the course at Orari yesterday. The weather, which had continued threatening during the previous night, fortunately cleared up at early morn, and a splendid day was experienced throughout. The course, notwithstanding previous rains, was m capital order. Mr R. Taylor, of the Geraldine Hotel, was the tenderer for all the privileges connected with the races. The attendance was fair. Messrs Mason ■ and Roberts were on the ground with their totalisator, and did a middling business. The first event of the day was the Handicap Hurdle Race, of 40 soys. Daisy took the lead at first, but after a struggle had to give way to Bordorman, and she fell back to third m the race. A capital race ensued between Borderman and Kingask for first place, which resulted as above. Totalisator dividend — £2 4s. Gang Forward Handicap, of 70 soys. Distance about three miles. Aynsley) 3 After a good start Secretary took a grand lead, with Irish King second. On jumping the hurdles nearest the straight, Irish King fell, and after Mitchell, its rider, mounting again and seeing he was out of the race, he retired from the contest. Secretary was closely followed by Moody, who gradually forged ahead. It was then observed that the race lay between Secretary and Moody, and on coming to the straight for the last time, the latter was hard held by its rider. Moody passed Secretary m the straight, and took first place amidst the cheers of the spectators. Totalisator dividend— £3 16s. Maiden Steeplechase, of 35 soya ; weight for age. About two miles. Mr F. J. Bradloy's br g Defiance, list 12ib, oyrs (Ewen) 1 Mr P. Jones' bg Hector, aged, 12st 31b (Owner) 2 Mr J. Higgins' Johnny, aged, 12st 31b (Owner) 3 Mr J. Worner's blk « Wrangler, and Mr H. B. Webster's b g Terry were scratched. On coming to tho straight for the first round, Johnny ran off the course, but the rider pluckily followed up the race, and was gaining ground when he fell. The rider mounted again, and made a grand spurt to regain his lost ground, but without effect. The race was between Hector and Defiance for first place, and after a very exciting run, Defiance passed the Judge's stand first. Totalisator dividend — £3 7s. Noveli Hurdle Race, of 30 soys. ; over six flights of hurdles, the winner to be the property of the Club, and to be submitted to auction after tho race. Mr H. Lco'a g g Shylock, late Bordeaux, aged (Mitchell) 1 Mr J. Armstrong's b g Seagull, aged, (Mason) 2 Mr J. Higgin's Johnny also ran ; Mr P. Jones' bg Hector, aged, was scratched. Totalisator dividend, £3 ss. Johnny went away with a slight lead. Shylock being close up. At the second hurdle Johnny ran off and was out of it. Shylock and Seagull soon camo up on equal terms. At the distance post Shylock was leading slightly, and a close race home landed him the winner by about a length. Bought mby Mr Armitago for £12. Tally-ho Handicap, of 50 soys. Messrs M. and C. Hobbs' b g Moody, and Mr J. Kerr's b g Linwood, aged, 32at lib, were scratched. At the first hurdle Kingask fell, but his rider again monnted and cleared the hurdle. The second hurdle being reached, Kingask baulked twice, and was out of the race, Secretary and Coryphee having

With other celebrations of the Jubilee yesterday thanksgiving services were held at the various churches, special service also taking place at St. Sepulchre's, at which all the Anglican clergy of the diocese attended. Bi3hop Cowio preached a sermon. A Jubilee banquet was given to the citizens of Auckland by the Mayor at tho Albert Hotel m the evening. A large number of guests were present. WELLINGTON, June 22. The last of the Jubilee matches was played this afternoon between the Wellington and Manawatu teams. The rain made the ground a perfect morass of mud. Only about 500 people were present. The local men were much too good for the visitors, and won by three goals and two tries to nothing. Mclntyre kicked two goals from tries, and Moorhouso potted one from the field.
