DEPORTATION OF FRENCH CONVICTS.
— • (By Telegraph.) Wellington, Nov. 4. The Governor has received from the Secretary for the Colonies, a copy of a despatch from Vißcount Lyons to Earl Rosebery, relating to an interview with M. de Freycinet on the subject of recidivistes being sent to New Caledonia. Viscount Lyons reminded M. do Freycinet that tho feeling m Australasia against tho deportation was as intense as ever. M. de Freycinet would give no assurance for the future, and said that New Caledonia and its dependencies, were so far back as November la3t, designed places to which recidivistes might be relegated, aud events had now occurred which rendered it very important that recourse should be had to them for that purpose. A proposal had been made by M. de Freycinet to the Imperial Government, which, had it been accepted, would have put an end to the transportation of French criminals to the Pacific. The interview ended with Viscount Lyons entering a fresh protest agninst tho transportation.
