Mr Derham, Postmaster-General, replying to the proposal of Mr Suttor, Postmaster-General of New South Wales, that Victoria should contribute to the subsidy for the New Zealand cable, has stated that the "Victorian Government declines to contribute except on a federal basis, which should include all cables connecting with Australia. ANOTHER RUSH. Several persons have left Melbourne for tho Wankaringa goldfielda. Adelaide, Oct. 21. Hundreds of persons are leaving Adelaide for the Waukaringa goldfields. The Government geologist reports that gold is distributed generally over the field. [Received 10.30 p.m., Oct. 21st. i Great excitement is being caused m this city by the encouraging reports which have been received from the Waukaringa goldfields. Several diggers on the field have telegraphed to their friends telling them to come at once. Already 800 diggers are on the field. In dry fossicking one person succeeded m getting sixteen ounces of gold for one week' 3 work. SHIPPING. Sydney, Oct. 21. The Waihora departed for Auckland, and the Wakatipu sailed this evening for Wellington. NO CONFIDENCE. Public meetings are being held throughout the colony opposing the present Government. Petitions are being signed m favour of a dissolution of Parliament. (Received 1.15 a.m., Oct. 22nd.) THE GOLD FEVER. Adelaide, Oct. 21. Hundreds of men are leaving the agricultural districts and provincial towns for the Waukaringa goldfields. COMMERCIAL. Melbourne, Oct. 21. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company held their usual •weekly sate to-day before a large attendance of buyers, fairly rppresentative. The catalogue submitted comprised 2800 bales, of which all but 300 were Bold at very satisfactory prices. AH good wools elicited spirited competition, and prices were firmly maintained ; faulty and inferior lots were slightly depressed ; greasy realised up to Hid, and scoured up to Is 7d.
