CHINESE WISDOM.
Tho Fdinbursh City Council on Monday (?llh May) received n silent lesson m Temperance from a.: unexpected quarter. In order to do honour to tho Marquis Teeng, who was on a visit to the city, the Council gave him a 'cake-and-wion 1 banquet, »nd duly
drank his health m the wine. But the exChinese Ambassador and his suite are, like many of their countrymen, total abstainers. The Edinburgh Evening jVcics Bays : It was noticed that neither the Marquis Tseng nor any of tho suite drank intoxicating liquors, partaking only of E "da water. Tho next time the Council wished to do honour to a visitor from tho Celestial Empire they will, if they givo a banquet at all, do well to make it a 'cake-ni!<l-len' banquet. Considering where most of the tea comes from, nnd that it is almost exclusively the drink of China, it seems rather extraordinary that this idea did not enter the- heade of any of tho sapient councillors upon the present occasion. No more felicitous recognition of the chief glory of tho marquis' country could havo been concsived.
