ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE CINGALESE.

Mr C. W. Turner's fino clipper barquo Cingalese, Captain Stannard, arrived from London late on Saturday night, after an uneventful and fino woathor passngo of 105 days from port to port. She dropped anchor m tho outer roads, where sho laid till yesterday morning whon the p.s. Titan, m ohargo of Captain Webster, harbonrmastor, steamed out to her, mado fast a hawsor on board, and after tho barque had hovo anchor, got hor under weigh and towed her into tho harbour to a berth alongside tho oater ond of tho railway wharf. Wo have to thank Captain Stannard for tho following report : — Sailed from Lyttelton for London at 4 p.m. on Oth February with Btrong S.W. wind, which changed to a stroug easterly wind on tho llth, whon tbo Chatbams wero sighted. On tho 17th passed a quantity of ieo ; on tho following day (lat. 57 S. , long. 145 W.) passed a very largo iceborg, and on the 20th, m lat. 55385.. long. 134'53W., a vory large berg ; about 300 feot high and 2 miles long. At 11.40 p.m. on tho 25th Feb., when running with a light breezo nnd fino clear weather, and steering N.E. by E. sighted an island bearing N.E. distanoe about threo miles. The N.E. end was a high bluff, and tho S.W. end very ruggod, and was reckoned by Capt. Stannard to be about six miles long m a N.E. ond S.W. direction. It was qnito clear of snow at tho timo (bar., 20.30; ther., 47). Captain Stannard i.s qnito certain it is Dougherty Island, and made it out m lat. 5920 S., long. 120' 18N. Tacked towards tho island next morning, and at noou with E.N.E wind tacked to tho north, tho island bearing S.E. Captain Stannard considors it very dangerous to vessels bound from Australia to Now Zealand round tho Horn. At the timo of his sighting it his attention was called to a number of seals that wero playing round tho ship, whioh mado 'him think that ho was near land. Between 445. and COS. had fifteon days easterly winds. Rounded the Horn on March Bth 27 days out, tho wind boing between north and east for 21 days. On Match Wth, during rcu?h weather, a heavy sea washedawoy tho head raiU, stanchions, and sevoral sails woro lost. Had northorly winds to tho equator and no S.E. trades, and then had twelvo days variables. Got tho N.E. trades m lat. 5N. , long. 81 W., and lost them m lat. 17N. and long. 40 W. ; bad light variable winds to lat. 43. N., 10 VI., and then strong winds dnring which tho bowsprit was carried away. Passed Cape Ushant on Mny lGth and moored m tho West India docks on the 18th, after a passage of 07 days frora wharf to whaif. After discharging m tho docks, and taking on board her ontward cargo, she sailed from London at 1.30 n.m. on Juno 18th, and at 7.30 p.m. cast off the tng pt Beachy Head. Took her departure from the Lizard on tho 21-^t, had moderate N.E. trades, and crossed tho equator on July 17th. Had no S.E. trades, nothing bnfc strong Roiitherly winds. When m lat. 4.} N. 1(5 W. a hale of cotton was picked up, but it had no marks or numbers, and hnd not apparently been m tho water long. Crossed tho meridian of Greenwich on August 17fch, and the Capo of Good Hopo on tho 25th, m lat. 41 S. Had light and variable winds to lat. 13 S., and long. 58 E. , and then hnd strong westerly wind 3, tho vessel averaging 210 miles por day for eight days, hor best day's work being 300 miles. Pus*ed Capo L»uwiti on tiie 19th ult., m lat. 4(1.30 S., and from thenoe till passing Tasmania on tiio 2Gth, m lat. 17 S. S.E. and E.N.E. winds. Shu theu ran before strong westerly winds till sighting Fovean.v Straits ut 8.30 a.m. on Thursday last. Parsed tho Bluff at 3.30 p.m. tha samo day ; and Capo Saunders on Friday, and had strong N.W. winds to arrival. During tho whole of tho passaga out tho captain never took iv a top-gallantsail and tho borqao comes into port m tho best of trim aud ns clean as a, n:iw pin, ansl is a credit to all on board. Captain Stannard statos sho is ono of thn best soa-boats ho ha-i sailotl m, and he found her sailing capabilities everything ho could wish for. Cap. Stannard, is well known m this port ns tho lato master of Mr Turner's barquo Bells ; his chiof officer is Mr Lewis, and his second officer Mr P. Ashford, Into socond officer of tho ship Rakaia. Tho Cingalese brings a full cargo of cement and general merchandise for this port, besides two largo boilers for tho Tiniaru Milling Company.
